With the aim of studying the structure of extratropical cyclones, the director of the RMI (from 1919 until 1940) Jules Jaumotte invented a sounding balloon meteorograph, which was robust, inexpensive, extremely light and straightforward to calibrate, which made it possible to carry out numerous measurements in close succession. Developed in 1927.
